There are 3,885 Michelin-starred restaurants in the world across 51 countries and territories, counting the 2026 MICHELIN Guide editions. France has the most, with 646, ahead of Italy (379). In the US, California leads every state with 83.

This page counts every starred restaurant by country, then by US state, from the same restaurant list that powers The Starred Bill’s price pages. It is rebuilt whenever a new guide is published, so the numbers below are always the latest we have. For what the stars mean, start with What is a Michelin star?

Michelin star restaurants by country

Each row counts restaurants, not stars: a three-star restaurant counts once. Tap a country to see what dinner, lunch and wine pairings cost at every one of its starred restaurants.

Europe dominates the list because the Guide began in France in 1900 and spread through Europe long before it reached the rest of the world. Japan is the big exception: the MICHELIN Guide has covered Tokyo since 2007, and it is the city with the most Michelin stars in the world. Newer guides, from the Philippines to New Zealand, start with only a handful of stars, and the counts grow as inspectors cover more cities.

Michelin star restaurants by state

There are 276 Michelin star restaurants in the USA, spread across 17 states and Washington DC, and 16 of them hold three stars. Michelin doesn’t cover the whole country: it publishes guides for particular states and regions, such as California, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Colorado, the American South and, since 2026, the Southwest, so a state with no guide has no stars, however good its restaurants are. That is why there are no Michelin star restaurants in Seattle, and why Indianapolis must wait for the new Great Lakes guide, in April 2027, for its first Michelin stars. A guide doesn’t guarantee stars, either: Arizona’s first, in August 2026, gave Phoenix Bib Gourmands but no stars.

California (83) and New York State (71) are far ahead of the rest. On its own, New York City has more starred restaurants than most countries. Florida comes third with 25.

Countries with no Michelin Guide

Some of the world’s great food countries have no Michelin stars at all. That isn’t a verdict on their restaurants: Michelin only awards stars where it publishes a guide, and it chooses where to go, often in partnership with a national tourism board.

How many Michelin star restaurants are in India?

None yet. India has no MICHELIN Guide for restaurants, although Michelin has rated Indian hotels with its Keys since 2025. Reports in 2026 say the government is close to a deal to bring the restaurant guide to India, with stars expected to start in the biggest cities. Until that happens, chefs born in India hold stars only abroad, in cities such as London, New York and Bangkok; we profile them in Indian chefs with Michelin stars. Are there any Michelin star restaurants in Australia?

No. Michelin has never published a guide for Australia, so the answer to how many Michelin star restaurants are in Australia is none: Sydney and Melbourne have no starred restaurants. Australian restaurants are rated instead by local guides, which award chef’s hats. Several Australian chefs run starred kitchens abroad. How many Michelin star restaurants are in New Zealand?

New Zealand is the newest country on the map. Michelin published its first guide for New Zealand in June 2026, and the country now has 15 starred restaurants: 14 one-star and 1 two-star. See our New Zealand page for prices.

Saudi Arabia and Indonesia

Saudi Arabia is the only country with a MICHELIN Guide but no stars: its first selection, in 2025, listed 51 restaurants in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla without starring any, as our guide to Michelin star restaurants in Saudi Arabia explains. South Africa

South Africa has no MICHELIN Guide and no stars. Michelin star restaurants in Canada, the UK and Ireland

How many Michelin star restaurants are in Canada?

Canada has 39 Michelin star restaurants (36 one-star and 3 two-star), in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Quebec City, the areas the Canadian guides cover, so there are no Michelin star restaurants in Ottawa, Calgary or Halifax. How many Michelin star restaurants are in the UK?

There are 198 Michelin star restaurants in the UK: 165 one-star, 23 two-star and 10 three-star. Of those, 84 are in London. Our UK page lists them all with prices, and 3 Michelin star restaurants in the UK covers the very top.

How many Michelin star restaurants are in Ireland?

Ireland has 23 starred restaurants (18 one-star and 5 two-star), published in the MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland. See our Ireland page.

How the numbers change each year

Every guide is revised once a year, so these counts move with each ceremony (here are the Michelin Guide ceremony dates). New restaurants earn first stars, others go up or down a level, and some close. The biggest moves are at the top: in 2026 so far, 8 restaurants reached three stars and 3 lost them.
