Are There Michelin Star Restaurants in Indonesia or Bali?

Updated October 9, 2026 · Star counts and prices checked October 2026

No. There are no Michelin star restaurants in Indonesia, in Bali, Jakarta or anywhere else, because the MICHELIN Guide doesn’t publish a restaurant guide for the country. Michelin does rate Indonesian hotels: 47 hold MICHELIN Keys in 2026. The nearest Michelin-starred restaurants are in Singapore, under two hours’ flight from Jakarta.

Indonesia is now the biggest country in South-East Asia without a MICHELIN Guide, after Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines all gained one. Here is why there are no stars, what you may see advertised instead in Bali, how Indonesia’s top restaurants are ranked, and where the nearest stars are, with their prices.

Does Indonesia have a MICHELIN Guide?

Not for restaurants. Michelin only awards stars in the places it publishes a guide for, and it has never inspected Indonesian restaurants. We checked the MICHELIN Guide’s own listings on 9 October 2026: it has no restaurant anywhere in Indonesia. New guides usually launch through a partnership with a national or regional tourism body that helps fund the inspections, as Thailand’s did in 2017 and the Philippines’ in 2025, and no such deal has been announced for Indonesia.

What Michelin does cover is hotels. Its MICHELIN Key, the hotel equivalent of a star, reached Indonesia in 2025, and the 2026 selection, published on 18 September, gives Keys to 47 Indonesian hotels and resorts, up from 33. Three hold the top three Keys: Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve near Ubud, Amanjiwo beside Borobudur in Central Java, and NIHI Sumba. A Key rates the whole stay, not the restaurant, so none of these hotels’ restaurants has a Michelin star.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Bali?

No. Bali has more Key hotels than anywhere else in Indonesia, about 30 of the 47, but no Michelin-starred restaurant. There is no Michelin star in Bali, but you will see “Michelin-starred chef” in some restaurant and hotel marketing on the island: that means the chef has won a star somewhere else, usually in Europe or elsewhere in Asia, not that the Bali restaurant has one.

Bali’s best-known fine dining is in Ubud, though there is no Michelin star in Ubud either. Locavore NXT, the more experimental successor to the original Locavore, built around Indonesian produce and a sustainability-driven approach, entered Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants at No. 44 in March 2026, the first time an Ubud restaurant has made the top 50.

Are there Michelin star restaurants in Jakarta?

No, for the same reason. Jakarta’s highest-ranked restaurant is August, a 50-seat dining room in the SCBD business district led by chef Hans Christian, which rose to No. 42 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026 and was named the Best Restaurant in Indonesia for the third year running. The same awards named Indonesia’s Ardhika Dwitama Asia’s Best Pastry Chef. These rankings are voted on by chefs, critics and well-travelled diners, so they aren’t Michelin stars, but they’re the best guide to where Michelin’s inspectors would start.

Indonesian food in the MICHELIN Guide

No Indonesian restaurant holds a Michelin star anywhere in the world, but several have Bib Gourmands, Michelin’s award for good cooking at a moderate price. Most are in the Netherlands, where Indonesian food has been part of daily life for generations: Blauw in Utrecht, Spandershoeve in Hilversum and Café Samabe in Haarlem. The others are Cumi Bali in Singapore, Lucky Indonesia in Hong Kong and Dija Mara in Oceanside, California.

The closest thing to Indonesian cooking with a star is Peranakan food, the cooking of the Chinese-Malay communities of the Straits, which shares many dishes with Indonesia’s. In Singapore, Candlenut became the world’s first Peranakan restaurant with a Michelin star, and Pangium holds one too; in Penang, so does Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery.

Where is the nearest Michelin star restaurant to Indonesia?

Singapore, about 1 hour 45 minutes’ flight from Jakarta and two and a half from Bali. It has 45 starred restaurants (33 one-star, 9 two-star and 3 three-star), from hawker stalls to three-star tasting menus, and Candlenut’s tasting menu costs S$138 (about $110). Our page for Michelin star restaurants in Singapore lists them all with lunch and wine pairing prices, and our guide to Singapore’s Michelin-starred hawker food covers the cheapest.

The MICHELIN Guide also covers Kuala Lumpur and Penang, about two hours from Jakarta, and Bangkok, which has 41 starred restaurants.

When will Indonesia get Michelin stars?

Michelin hasn’t announced an Indonesian guide, and we haven’t seen reports of talks, so there is no date yet for the first Michelin star in Indonesia. We’ll update this page as soon as there is news, and add a page for every Indonesian city in the guide, with its restaurants’ prices, when the first stars are revealed.
