The Starred Bill (starredbill.com) compares prices at Michelin-starred restaurants. This page explains what we keep about you, and why. You can use the whole site without an account.
Who we are
The Starred Bill is an independent website run from the United Kingdom. It isn't connected with Michelin or the MICHELIN Guide. We decide how the personal data described here is used, which makes us its “controller” under UK data protection law. For anything on this page, email hello@starredbill.com.
Without an account
Your wishlist and your choice of language and currency are kept only in your own browser (its local storage). They never reach us. We don't use advertising cookies.
To show the site, your browser also fetches things from other companies, and like any website they receive your IP address: Google (maps, restaurant photos and the site's fonts), ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com, for today's exchange rates when you change currency) and, only when you sign in, jsDelivr (the sign-in code).
Your location
When you tap “Near me” or “Use my location”, your browser asks whether to share your location. If you allow it, the distances to restaurants are worked out on your device; your location is never sent to us or recorded in our visit statistics. If you type a town or postcode on the Near me page instead, it's looked up with Google's place search. If you ask for travel times, or for the restaurants along a route, your starting point and the places you're going to are sent to Google to work them out. Only if you tick “Remember this location” is it saved, in your own browser, along with the stars of the restaurants nearby so the page can show which have won a star since your last visit; unticking the box removes both.
Cookies and Google Analytics
If you click Accept on our cookie banner, we also use Google Analytics, which sets cookies to recognise returning visitors and shows us how the site is used: pages viewed, time spent, where visitors come from, and the same anonymous clicks Umami counts. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. If you click Reject, or make no choice, Google Analytics doesn't run and sets no cookies.
Visit statistics
We count visits with Umami, which uses no cookies and doesn't identify you. It records the page, the site you came from, your country and type of device, and anonymous counts of clicks such as saving a restaurant, sharing a page, searching or opening a restaurant's website. On Help me pick it counts the answers chosen, such as the city, meal or budget, but never your location. When someone creates an account or signs in, it records only that this happened and whether by email or Google, never your email address.
With a free account
When you create an account we keep:
- your email address, and, if you sign in with Google, the name and profile picture on your Google account
- the restaurants on your wishlist and the ones you've marked as been there, with any dates you add
We use these only to sign you in and to show your lists on any device. We never sell them or share them for marketing, and we don't send newsletters unless you ask for them.
If you email us
We keep your email address and message so we can reply, and delete them once they're no longer needed (normally within a year).
Why we're allowed to use it
- Your account: to provide the account you asked for (a contract with you).
- Google Analytics: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the Change cookie choice button above.
- Umami visit counts and replying to emails: our legitimate interest in running and improving the site, in ways that don't identify you or that you started.
Who handles it
- Supabase stores accounts and lists, on servers in London.
- Resend sends the sign-in emails.
- Google, only if you choose Continue with Google.
- Umami counts visits, without cookies (see Visit statistics).
- Google Analytics, only if you accept cookies.
Google, Resend and Umami may handle data outside the UK, including in the United States. When they do, they rely on the protections UK law requires, such as the UK–US data bridge or the UK's approved contract clauses.
Your browser keeps a sign-in token so you stay signed in. Signing out removes it, along with the copy of your lists on that device.
How long we keep it
Until you delete your account. You can do that at any time from Your account: it removes your account and both lists straight away.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can see the data we hold, get a copy to take elsewhere (use Download my data on Your account), correct it, delete it, object to how it's used, or withdraw your consent. To ask about any of this, email hello@starredbill.com; we'll reply within a month. If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this notice changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
